In sixteenth Century Holland, Cornelius Van Baerle spends his time cultivating, ignorant of the fact that his godfather, Cornelius de Witt, was murdered for having supported Louis XI. Cornelius is also unaware of the fact that his success in growing a rare black Tulip has given rise to an enemy, his neighbour Boxtel, who alters the authorities that cornelius is connected with political dissidents. Poor Cornelius is arrested and thrown in jail where he becomes friends with Rosa, the daughter of the turnkey and eith her help; he successfully grows the black tulip. But before she presents the tulip to authorities, another obstacle arises.
